Thank Talos I’m Angry Again

There’s nothing more obnoxious than a music elitist. I think what we put into our bodies matters, including the music we listen to. I don’t think it’s right to feel shame for liking what you like. I think it’s evil to make people feel shame for listening to something you don’t like. I have a Twenty One Pilots tattoo for god’s sake. I also recently got the La Dispute logo on my outer wrist. You think I give a fuck about the things you have to say about that? Ooh, someone who derives genuine happiness from music that I find cringe. How shall we smite thee? Like, you’re outing yourself as unhappy and insecure right off the bat with that one. The internet only makes it worse. I will admit, there’s been some unsavory music that’s born of the internet. But if I dislike it, that’s as far as I’ll take it. Some things sound different to others. Some people hear what you aren’t hearing. For example, the new Waterparks album. I’ve been a Waterparks fan for some time now. But this new one, Jinx, is really hitting. Sonically speaking, it’s definitely not something I’d regularly listen to. But there’s substance to the lyrics. There’s a level of philosophical inquiry to their more recent lyrics that really speaks to me. The last song off Jinx, GIRLS NEED GUNS, is a beautiful song that makes me cry, so I can’t listen to it. Jeez, or think about it apparently. Anyway, it’s really about what matters to you when you listen to music. Everyone is looking for something different in the world of sounds. It’s not your place to judge. Also? Stop calling music you secretly/”ironically” enjoy bad. Once again, it just screams insecurity. If you like it, is it really all that bad? When did we become so concerned with aligning with the masses? When did it suddenly become uncool to listen to different things than other people? Some people preach that being unique is the end-all, be-all goal. So act like it. Do things out of the norm. Not just out of the societal norm, but your norm. If you’re so unique, why do you listen to only heavy music? Where’s your fucking whimsy, my guy? If you’re so open, and your taste is so eclectic, why do you turn your nose up at country, or gospel, or a microphone thrown in a metal trashcan full of exploding firecrackers? I’ve seen people tell musicians who make music they don’t like to kill themselves. Please exit the internet and try going to a show and telling them to kill themselves to their face. Literally, touch some fucking grass. And the whole “my musical opinion is gospel and the only right one” attitude can go too. That one doesn’t even need to be musically related. But my point is, whether you’re a spiritual person or not, music affects us on a very deep and profound level. Don’t let people tell you how to honor yourself like that. You deserve to listen to what makes you feel good, without guilt or shame. Listen to something you hate today, and find something you like in it. It’s not hard, I promise. Much love.
