Binaries Are Crap

Today I am angry about binaries. Firstly, I don’t even believe in cis people. I think they’re lying and lacking the depth aspect of the self. On a serious note, though, there are far too many biological factors contributing to one’s sex that a binary system fails to include a solid portion of the population. I don’t see “men” and “women” as inherently different because the reality is that they aren’t different. From a legitimately scientific standpoint, binary gender is a method of social control. We were conditioned into believing these things. Some people become so conditioned that they adhere to this binary like it’s doing them a favor. It’s not. Secondly, I’m getting really tired of seeing people act like there’s such a thing as a good vs. bad binary. There’s no such thing as a person who sits comfortably at one extreme without ever budging from their place. Even evil people do good things sometimes. This is also a form of social control. By labeling someone publicly as a “good” person ensures that any wrongdoing they’ve done is swept under the rug, whereas a “bad” person’s actions are heavily scrutinized and picked apart without hesitation. Bad people constantly have pop therapy terms and psychiatric illnesses thrown at them by the general public who only learned what a narcissist is from Instagram infographics. Half the time, these “bad” people don’t embody a single trait of these disorders. They’re just behaving in a way that makes people uncomfortable. The big kicker here is that everyone acts like their versions of good and bad are gospel. Knowing things doesn’t ensure you’re going to use that knowledge. I want people to hear that. You can read, you can scroll, you can do whatever you fucking want with this half-assed, half-true information you’re being fed by “doctors” and “therapists” online who have gained a cult following for telling people what they want to hear. These people are human beings too, capable of good and bad just as well as you and I are. You are not invincible. Just because you know how to conduct yourself properly doesn’t mean that you will. I am begging people: please use your brains. Your critical thinking skills are dwindling, your brain matter is greying, you’re rotting completely from the top down. And stop using therapy/psychiatry terms in everyday language. You’re causing more harm than good. My advice for today is to linger in the grey areas of life– when someone makes any sort of absolutist claim, I want you to think about it. I want you to question the authority of the speaker and think for yourself. Please. It can even be this blog post, if you’d like. What authority on the matter do I have? Only years of lived experience and constantly practicing being who I want to be every day. It’s just as much authority as those therapists with a cult following everyone adores so much. The first step of critical thinking is to just question everything. Even if you think you know the answer. Refuse complacency, and you’ll do just fine.
